is set to soar into a brand-new adventure in 2027, as announced by developer Toys for Bob during the Xbox Games Showcase. Titled Spyro: A Realm Beyond, this marks the first mainline Spyro game since 2008’s The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, and Spyro’s first fresh outing since the Skylanders series.
Toys for Bob previously revitalized the Spyro franchise in 2011 with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, a toys-to-life title that featured Spyro while primarily introducing new characters through collectible figures. They also crafted the 2018 release of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, which bundled together the dragon’s original three adventures from Insomniac Games.
For Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the team aims to enhance the classic gameplay of Spyro the Dragon and “amplify the fantasy of being a dragon.” According to associate creative director Louis Studdert, players will experience “true dragon flight.” “You can roam the environment and take to the skies at a moment’s notice,” Studdert shared in an interview prior to the game’s reveal. The flight mechanics will be integral to exploring the brand-new world of A Realm Beyond.
Studdert highlighted the focus on “fluidity of movement,” ensuring that dragon flight is more dynamic than merely pressing a button or hitting a speed-boost pad. Players will actively flap Spyro’s wings and utilize updrafts for added lift. Additionally, Spyro can ignite small fires with his breath to assist in launching into the sky, where players will interact with the environment to gain speed and fully explore A Realm Beyond’s expansive world.
Both Studdert and Paul Yan, the studio head and chief creative officer, stressed that Spyro: A Realm Beyond is designed with both newcomers and longtime fans in mind. “We’ve listened to the community and fanbase,” Studdert noted, recognizing Spyro’s beloved status and their commitment to honoring that legacy.
In a treat for fans of the classic Spyro games, Tom Kenny will reprise his role as the voice of Spyro the Dragon. Kenny has been the voice of Spyro since 1999, starting with Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, and has lent his voice to numerous Spyro titles since.
While many details about Spyro: A Realm Beyond remain under wraps, Studdert and Yan confirmed that the game will be a single-player experience, though they refrained from disclosing whether it would be fully open-world. “More to come on that,” Studdert remarked when asked about the game’s structure. Yan added, “With the freedom of flight, there are many cascading implications. We followed our instincts to see where that leads, ensuring we preserve the essence of Spyro and what resonates with his fans.”
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is scheduled for release in spring 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
