Crazy Taxi Makes a Comeback, Set to Conquer the Gaming Scene

At The Game Awards 2023, Sega revealed its plans to reboot five iconic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi. So far, the only title we’ve seen is Shinobi: The Art of Vengeance, which launched last August and marked a promising start for Sega’s revival efforts. Now, during this year’s Summer Game Fest showcase, we got our first look at Sega’s reimagined stunt-racing arcade classic, Crazy Taxi: World Tour. This new installment is set to hit Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2027.

The latest trailer showcases a revamped version of the original’s San Francisco-inspired map, maintaining the essence of Crazy Taxi while enhancing the visuals. The beloved driver Alex is back, and he’ll face off against some new rivals. The gameplay remains true to its roots, focusing on picking up and dropping off passengers as quickly as possible. World Tour introduces some quirky new elements, such as a fishing mini-game and a passenger loaded with pizzas.

Originally released in February 1999, the arcade version of Crazy Taxi featured a San Francisco-inspired map and made its way to Sega’s Dreamcast the following year. The game is known for its fast-paced action, offering gameplay modes with countdown timers or set rounds of three, five, and ten minutes. Players can boost their earnings by performing stunts, like catching air and narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles.

In July 2024, we caught a glimpse of the rebooted Crazy Taxi through Sega job listings that described it as a “large-scale online title,” “open world,” and a “massively multiplayer driving game.” The original game is a high-octane arcade experience centered around racing through a city to transport passengers as quickly as possible.

Although Crazy Taxi has been off the radar for a while, Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio paid homage to the franchise with the Crazy Delivery minigame in 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which also appears in 2025’s Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour is set to launch in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Streets of Rage 4 studio Lizardcube is bringing Shinobi back into the spotlight.
