Minecraft is set to grow with a significant new game launching this September.

There are few certainties in life besides death, taxes, and the enduring popularity of Minecraft. This iconic game is set to expand its universe later this year with an eagerly awaited sequel.

During a recent showcase, it was revealed that Minecraft Dungeons 2 will launch on September 29 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. This title stands out as one of the few from Xbox Game Studios featured in the event that will be available on platforms beyond Xbox.

Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the new installment from Mojang Studios will once again take players on an isometric dungeon-crawling adventure. The official site teases, “A new threat stirs, ready to descend upon the land and its inhabitants to cause unspeakable mayhem. Become a hero and take on foes unlike anything you’ve faced before, journey through long-forgotten locations, and clash with the forces of evil once more!”

The original Minecraft Dungeons debuted in 2020 to solid acclaim. While it was praised as a great entry point for fans of Diablo-style looting, some critics felt its streamlined gameplay was overly simplistic. However, with over 25 million players engaging with Dungeons as of 2023, Mojang has little reason to change its approach. The spin-off’s success aligns perfectly with Minecraft’s status as one of the best-selling games ever. Both Dungeons and the original Minecraft have also excelled in supporting their communities post-launch, with Dungeons receiving numerous updates that introduced new endgame content, biomes, and more.

Nearly 15 years after Minecraft first launched, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. The original game continues to receive regular updates, and there are two additional spin-offs alongside Dungeons: Telltale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode and the action-strategy hybrid Minecraft Legends. Last year, a Minecraft movie defied critical expectations to become a box office hit, grossing over $961 million. Steve has made appearances in other franchises, including the latest Super Smash Bros., and Minecraft has begun to embrace Fortnite-style crossovers with popular series like Dragon Ball Z. In a gaming landscape where many live-service titles are faltering, this blocky juggernaut remains unstoppable.
