Final Fantasy Debuts Its First HD-2D Title, Proving the Anticipation Was Justified

The trend of 2D sprites navigating a 3D environment has been gaining traction in Japanese role-playing games, and it’s easy to see why. This retro style evokes the nostalgia of ’90s Final Fantasy titles. Ironically, it’s taken until 2026 for a leading game in this subgenre to receive its own ‘HD-2D’ treatment.

Final Fantasy Resonance was unveiled during a recent showcase, and it certainly catches the eye. This turn-based JRPG isn’t limited to the Switch 2; it’s also set to launch on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox, though it feels like a perfect fit for portable gaming. Like many titles featured in the showcase, it will also be available on the original Switch.

The concept emerged from Square Enix’s exploration of a world where Final Fantasy continued to evolve while retaining its pixel art roots. The narrative centers around crystals, all presented in high-definition pixel art.

Drawing from the broader Final Fantasy universe, the game features iconic characters such as Cloud Strife, Noctis, and Lightning. Fans won’t have to wait long, as Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026. Square Enix promises that the game captures the original charm of the series. In discussions, many fans are likening Resonance to the now-defunct mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Typically, suggesting a game looks like it belongs on mobile would be a slight, but in this case, it’s seen as a positive.

One comment on the trailer expressed, “This was a dream come true. Thank you for reviving Brave Exvius.” Another user exclaimed, “I can’t believe this is real.”

The comparison makes sense, as Final Fantasy Resonance adapts the storyline from the first season of Brave Exvius and incorporates elements from various updates and unique story content. While it’s not a direct remake or port, Brave Exvius serves as the foundation for this new title.

Most of the game showcases the signature HD-2D aesthetic, though some elements—possibly cutscenes—appear to be rendered in 3D. Square Enix highlights that the game features pixel art complemented by dynamic camera work.

The final chapter of the remake trilogy also received a detailed new trailer, along with a release date set for 2027.
