It’s been a long wait since Kingdom Hearts 4 was first revealed during the franchise’s 20th anniversary livestream, where we got our first look at gameplay. While Square Enix’s other major RPG, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, took center stage at the recent Summer Game Fest, Kingdom Hearts was notably absent. However, fans were treated to a fresh gameplay trailer during Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct livestream, which brought some exciting new details.
Similar to the trailer from 2022, this new footage centers on Sora’s intense battle against a massive Darkside Heartless in the visually stunning world of Quadratum, reminiscent of Shibuya. The trailer opens with a mysterious hooded figure in Organization 13 robes standing atop a building, narrating the complexities of this world, which exists independently from others in the series.
“The structure of this world is incredibly complex,” she explains. “Initially, there were no signs of what we recognize as Light and Darkness. But our arrival here brought those concepts with us — the Darkness took physical form only after we defined it.”
The focus remains on Sora’s cinematic showdown with the Darkside, showcasing his new chain-like ability linked to his Keyblade as he leaps off cars and buildings to protect civilians in peril. We also catch glimpses of various characters, both new and familiar, including a notable scene where Young Xehanort appears to shield Sora from the rain with an umbrella, hinting at a cryptic teaser image shared earlier this year.
Sora is then seen in actual combat, battling new types of Heartless during both day and night. In a standout moment, he uses his Keyblade to open a portal that summons a swarm of golden Keyblades, which he rides to unleash damage on enemies. The trailer also features in-game combat against the Darkside, moving beyond mere cutscenes. In the climactic final shot, Sora deflects a direct attack from the enemy to protect two civilians caught in its path.
While the trailer doesn’t provide any clues about a release date, it does confirm that Kingdom Hearts 4 will be available on all platforms at launch, including the Nintendo Switch 2. The graphics appear significantly enhanced, showcasing a more realistic style compared to the series’ traditional cartoonish aesthetic.
