BYD Plans to Roll Out Thousands of 5-Minute EV Chargers Throughout Europe
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is ramping up its efforts to dominate the European auto market by introducing ultra-fast Flash Chargers throughout the continent. The company has already set up its first chargers in Germany and the UK, with plans to deploy a total of 3,000 across Europe by the end of next year.
With an estimated price tag of €580,000 (around $670,000) per charger, the total investment for this network could reach approximately $2 billion. These 1,500kW charging stations offer significantly more power than Tesla’s 500kW V4 Superchargers, although Tesla currently boasts 20,000 chargers across Europe. BYD, which has been steadily gaining ground on Tesla in global sales, assures that its chargers will not overburden the energy grid, as they will draw power from batteries that can be recharged overnight.
Any vehicle equipped with a standard CCS charge port can utilize the Flash Chargers, but only BYD models featuring the new Blade Battery can achieve the maximum charging speeds. Currently, the only model available in Europe with this capability is the Denza Z9 GT, priced at €115,000 ($133,000), which can reach 70 percent charge in just five minutes using the new chargers.
