The creators of Fate/Stay Night are bringing back a cherished manga from two decades ago.

The anime powerhouse Aniplex is bringing back a classic romance mystery manga nearly twenty years after its original serialization. The new TV adaptation will be animated by Studio DEEN, known for hits like Fate/Stay Night, Higurashi When They Cry, and Ranma ½. This revival was announced on June 9, following an exciting countdown that had fans buzzing on social media. Dengeki Daisy is set to make its return with a fresh anime adaptation slated for 2027.

This series is based on Kyousuke Motomi’s 16-volume shojo manga, which ran from 2007 to 2013 under Shogakukan’s Betsucomi imprint. Dengeki Daisy tells the story of Teru Kurebayashi, a high school student who finds herself under the protection of a mysterious figure known as “Daisy” after her older brother passes away. To cope with her grief, Teru takes a job as a school janitor, where she encounters the strict and intimidating Tasuka Kurosaki, who may be linked to both her enigmatic guardian and her brother’s past.

The manga made its North American debut in 2010 when it was licensed for English release. While Dengeki Daisy performed steadily in Japan, it gained a significant following in the West during the early 2010s shojo boom. Over time, it garnered a cult status among Western shojo fans, particularly for its unique blend of romance and mystery, along with the intriguing male lead trope that became a hallmark of the series.

Throughout its run, the manga sold over five million copies, establishing it as one of the more enduring titles from the Shojo Beat era, even if it never reached the mainstream heights of blockbusters like Fruits Basket or Nana. Recently, anime production committees have been revisiting mid-tier shojo titles from the 2000s, as nostalgia-driven revivals and streaming demand reshape the landscape for older IP adaptations.

Souta Ueno will direct the series, bringing his recent experience from Days with My Stepsister and Shibouyugi: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table. Ueno is known for his unique storytelling style, effectively balancing quirky narratives with emotional depth, which could lend an interesting tone to Dengeki Daisy.

To mark the announcement, Motomi created a special illustration featuring Kurosaki and Teru, with each character holding a flag and drum, respectively, alongside captions celebrating the anime adaptation. The main banner prominently states: “Dengeki Daisy Anime Adaptation Greenlit! Scheduled to broadcast in 2027.”
