Avatar: Fire and Ash Set to Stream Sooner Than Anticipated
Great news for fans who missed out on Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters or those looking to catch it again with the luxury of a bathroom break: the third installment of the Avatar saga will be available on Disney Plus starting June 24, three days ahead of the previously announced June 27 date.
James Cameron’s sci-fi epic kicked off with a bang in 2009, with the original Avatar becoming the highest-grossing film ever, raking in an astounding $2.924 billion at the box office. Following this monumental success, Cameron quickly mapped out a series of sequels, but a series of delays led to a 13-year wait before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Despite the long hiatus, the franchise maintained its momentum; while the sequel didn’t quite match the original’s box office magic, it still grossed $2.334 billion, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time.
Last year’s Fire and Ash, however, didn’t perform as strongly, earning $1.485 billion against a budget estimated between $350 and $450 million. While this figure is likely enough to turn a profit after accounting for marketing and other expenses, Cameron has been somewhat tight-lipped about the future of the franchise. Avatar 4 and 5 are slated for release in 2029 and 2031, respectively, but their production hinges on the performance of Fire and Ash.
Cameron humorously suggested that if the sequels don’t materialize, he would hold a press conference to share the plot details of the unwritten films. In light of the dip in earnings, he expressed a desire to produce Avatar 4 and 5 in “half the time for two-thirds of the cost,” a plan that will take about a year to develop.
As for Fire and Ash, while its CGI remains top-notch, some viewers felt it mirrored its predecessor too closely, featuring similar conflicts and challenges. This has led to discussions about potential new directions for the franchise. Although it seems surprising that Cameron would face hurdles in securing approval for sequels to the highest-grossing film ever, the upcoming streaming performance of Fire and Ash will likely influence the future of the series in theaters.
