Warhammer 40K Team Attributes Extra Space Marine Finger in New Art to Human Error, Not AI
Warhammer 40,000 enthusiasts recently noticed an odd detail in a new piece of artwork. One of the Space Marines depicted appeared to have an extra finger, sparking accusations that the creators were using AI tools. However, Games Workshop has attributed the anomaly to a simple human error.
On June 8, Games Workshop unveiled new artwork showcasing MkIV Space Marines in action alongside a tank. The piece embodies the classic “grimdark” aesthetic that fans adore, featuring heavily armored warriors and imposing vehicles. But hold on—let’s take a closer look at that one Space Marine in the foreground.
Sure enough, he seems to have six fingers on that hand. Five are visible, suggesting a thumb is tucked behind the weapon. Once this detail caught the attention of fans, they erupted with claims that the company had resorted to AI for the artwork. Given the significant investment players make in books and other materials that showcase intricate art, it’s understandable why many were upset about the possibility of AI-generated content infiltrating Warhammer 40K. The uproar prompted Games Workshop to clarify that no AI was involved in the creation of the art, attributing the mistake to human oversight.
“Does that Space Marine have an extra finger? Yes, but it’s not AI or early signs of mutation among the Traitor Legions,” the company stated. “The Horus Heresy art style, since its inception in 2012, involves an artist blending miniature photography with traditional art to craft a dramatic scene. In this instance, it just added a bit of unexpected flair. So please, be kind to our artists. They are entirely human.”
While some fans remain skeptical of this explanation, a closer look at the rest of the artwork doesn’t reveal any signs of AI influence. Given the company’s firm stance against the use of generative AI (for now), I’m inclined to chalk up this extra finger to a human blunder rather than AI involvement. However, I still have my doubts about that Kingdom Hearts artwork with extra fingers…
