Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update Tackles Major Player Frustration
Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched a couple of years back and has generally been well-received, though players have mixed feelings about its fast travel system. The mechanics can feel restrictive, as teleporting across the map relies on rare, one-time-use items or riding in an oxcart that might get ambushed by monsters along the way. Expect to spend a lot of time retracing your steps on foot.
With the upcoming Dark Arisen expansion on the horizon, Capcom is rolling out two major updates for Dragon’s Dogma 2. The first update, now available, introduces the Eternal Ferrystone. This item functions like the standard Ferrystones, allowing you to teleport your party to any Portcrystal you’ve activated, but with unlimited uses. It’s a game-changer for those tired of the tedious back-and-forth across familiar terrain. You’ll obtain the Eternal Ferrystone during the “Seat of the Sovran” quest, which comes fairly early in the game.
Additionally, more Portcrystals have been added to the map. You can now find them in Melve, Checkpoint Rest Town, and Volcanic Island Camp. Completing the “Monster Culling” quest will also reward you with a Portcrystal that you can place wherever you like.
The June update also includes various UI improvements, adjustments to quest rewards and treasure chest contents, a comprehensive list of bug fixes, and a new specialization for Pawns. The Guardian specialization enables Pawns to fend off oxcart attacks and enhances their protective abilities while you’re camping. For a full rundown of the changes, you can check the game’s official site, which also teases the upcoming August free update that will bring a host of tweaks to vocations, enemies, and more.
We found Dragon’s Dogma 2 to be an enjoyable experience, despite its occasionally frustrating design choices. “Understanding its quirks makes it unique; reassessing how an open-world game can function leads to uncovering its charm,” our 2024 review notes.
Later this fall, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will receive a new expansion. The trailer revealed during a recent Nintendo Direct not only announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version but also served as the reveal for the upcoming Dark Arisen DLC. It was a rather perplexing way to announce DLC, which feels fitting for Dragon’s Dogma 2.
