The Fast & Furious Franchise Makes Its Return to Theaters

The multi-billion dollar Fast and Furious franchise kicked off 25 years ago with The Fast and the Furious, an action-packed film centered around illegal street racing, an undercover cop with a soft spot, and a stash of stolen DVD-VCR combo units. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the original film is making a comeback in theaters, allowing fans to dive back into the vibrant car culture of early 2000s Los Angeles.

Director Rob Cohen’s adrenaline-fueled classic will hit theaters again on August 21 with the release of The Fast And The Furious: 25th Anniversary. Tickets for these special screenings are already available.

To get you hyped for the return, check out this surprisingly emotional trailer—after all, it’s a family film at heart.

The Fast and the Furious marks the beginning of a 10-film saga (not counting Better Luck Tomorrow) and was a box office hit, raking in over $207 million during its initial run. This success paved the way for a series of sequels, with the franchise reaching its commercial peak in 2015 with Furious 7, which grossed an astounding $1.5 billion. The latest installment, 2023’s Fast X, didn’t quite match that figure, but excitement is already building for the 11th and supposedly final chapter, Fast Forever, set to release on March 17, 2028.

But there’s more on the horizon for Fast fans! Just last month, Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto, revealed that four TV shows set in the Fast and Furious universe are in the works at Universal Television, including a live-action series for NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

If The Fast And The Furious: 25th Anniversary is your first foray into the franchise, here’s what to expect based on the official description:

Get ready for an adrenaline rush and some serious horsepower. On the turbo-charged streets of Los Angeles, every night is a championship race. With nitro-boosted fury, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) dominates the road, leaving his challengers in the dust. He and his rival, Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), are the boldest and baddest on the scene. But a new contender has arrived. They know he’s tough and fast, but what they don’t realize is that he’s a speed demon detective (Paul Walker) with the drive and determination to come out on top. Packed with intense action, jaw-dropping stunts, and full-throttle intensity, this fast-paced ride puts you in the driver’s seat and dares you to push beyond all limits.

And let’s not forget the classic cookouts that often wrap up these films, featuring key cast members. So, we’ll leave you with a cookout ranking. Cheers to that!

Nothing beats that vault heist!
