Apple Greenlights Season 2 of Widow’s Bay
Apple TV has announced that the horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay will return for a new season ahead of its finale on June 17. The show debuted on April 29 and has received rave reviews for its unique blend of folk horror and humor.
Set on a fictional New England island, Widow’s Bay follows Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), the town’s mayor, who is determined to transform his small community into a bustling tourist destination. However, his plans are complicated by a centuries-old curse that seems to plague the town. While Loftis initially dismisses these tales as mere superstition, he and the townsfolk soon find themselves facing bizarre events that challenge his skepticism.
Created by Katie Dippold, known for her work on Parks and Recreation and the film The Heat, the series has garnered attention for its clever writing. With the renewal announcement, Apple TV also revealed a multiyear overall deal with Dippold. “Season two is about how everything is great on the island and there’s nothing to worry about,” Dippold shared.
Hiro Murai, recognized for his direction on Atlanta and Station Eleven, directed five episodes of Widow’s Bay and serves as an executive producer. The cast includes Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and Stephen Root, adding depth to the quirky ensemble.
“From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laughs, and cursed secret that Katie, Hiro, Matthew, and the entire team have created,” said a programming executive at Apple TV. “It’s become one of those shows everyone’s talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continue to embrace it. We can’t wait to return for another season.”
The success of Widow’s Bay adds to Apple TV’s growing collection of unique hits, which includes acclaimed series like Pluribus, Severance, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses, and Shrinking. While the platform has faced its share of missteps and cancellations, it has built an impressive and diverse lineup. Looking ahead, the intriguing sci-fi mystery series Silo is set to return for its third season this July, while Ted Lasso aims for a comeback in August.
