RPG Maker Community Rallies to Save 14 Years of Valuable Resources Amid Crisis
Gotcha Gotcha Games, a subsidiary of Kadokawa Corporation and the holder of the RPG Maker franchise, has announced that the RPG Maker Forum, which has been active for 14 years, will shut down on December 11, 2026. A new forum called RPG Maker Guild will replace it, but Gotcha Gotcha Games has confirmed that the original forum’s content will not be archived, prompting the RPG Maker community to rush to save their resources.
The closure was officially revealed in a post on the RPG Maker Forum, accompanied by a FAQ that outlined the reasons behind the decision. “There are currently no plans to provide a public archive or backup of the current forum once it has been closed,” the FAQ states. “We encourage users to save any posts, guides, resources, or other content they wish to keep before the forum closure.”
This situation has sparked significant concern within the community, with many comparing the forum’s closure to the burning of the Library of Alexandria. While some may view this as an overreaction, the potential loss of RPG Maker resources is indeed substantial. For instance, the Legacy Engine support topic alone reportedly contains around 45,600 threads and 280,000 messages.
Moreover, the impact extends beyond just amateur developers. Numerous well-known indie games, such as OFF, Omori, Corpse Party, Fear and Hunger, Ao Oni, and Yume Nikke, were developed using RPG Maker, and the history of these games is documented within the forum’s posts.
Fortunately, the six-month notice provided by Gotcha Gotcha Games has allowed RPG Maker fans ample time to back up their content. One dedicated fan has even reached out to the r/DataHoarders subreddit for assistance in preserving these valuable resources.
