Record-Breaking Sale: Sealed Super Mario Bros. Fetches $3 Million
A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros., still in its original box and featuring the original sticker, has just fetched an astonishing $3 million at auction. This sale shatters the previous record of $2 million for another copy of the same game, set in 2021, which followed closely after a heated auction for Super Mario 64 that sold for $1.56 million.
What makes this particular copy so valuable is its unique sealing method; instead of the typical shrink wrap, this 1985 second run is sealed with a glossy sticker that was phased out shortly after production. It’s touted as the earliest known sealed copy of the game, graded at an impressive 9.6 A++ by Professional Sports Authenticator.
The market for vintage gaming collectibles has been on a meteoric rise in recent years. Just back in July 2020, the record for the highest auction price for a game was set at $114,000 for a copy of Super Mario Bros. Fast forward six years, and that price now seems like a steal.
As a bonus, if the auction winner dares to break the seal on this prized game, they’ll also receive an NES console to play it on.
