A Minecraft Movie Squared Is Official — New Title, Cast, and 2027 Release Date Confirmed

The Minecraft movie universe is officially expanding. Warner Bros. and Legendary have confirmed that the sequel to 2025’s wildly successful A Minecraft Movie is now officially titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, and it’s heading to theatres on July 23, 2027. The announcement was made during Minecraft Live at TwitchCon Rotterdam, where the cast appeared together to tease what’s coming next.

Why the Original Did So Well — and Why the Sequel Has Big Shoes to Fill

The first Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, became one of the most unexpected box office events of 2025. It earned close to $1 billion at the worldwide box office and set a record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game movie adaptation, pulling in $301 million in its first weekend alone. Much of its viral success was driven by the now-legendary Chicken Jockey scene, which caused cinema audiences around the world to erupt — and turned what could have been a niche animated film into a genuine cultural moment.

The sequel now has to match and surpass that energy, which is no small ask.

New Cast, New Characters, and What We Know About the Story

The returning cast includes Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry. Joining them for the sequel is Kirsten Dunst, who had publicly expressed interest in joining the franchise because of her children’s love for both the game and the first film. Her character is widely expected to be Alex — one of Minecraft’s two primary default player characters — who was briefly teased in a post-credits scene in the original movie.

Filming is currently underway in New Zealand with support from Weta, the visual effects studio based in Wellington. Both Jack Black and Jason Momoa have teased that the sequel will take the world “so much deeper into the Minecraft universe,” and co-star Danielle Brooks echoed that sentiment. There are early fan theories suggesting the story could explore The End dimension and potentially introduce the Ender Dragon — though nothing has been officially confirmed on the story front yet.
