Nintendo Switch 2 Is Nearly at 20 Million Units Sold — The Numbers Are Staggering
Nintendo’s newest console has had one of the most impressive launch years in gaming hardware history. The Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025, reached just under 20 million units sold globally by March 31, 2026 — finishing the fiscal year at 19.86 million units and surpassing Nintendo’s own revised target of 19 million.
How Fast Has It Actually Sold?
To put the pace in perspective — the Switch 2 moved 3.5 million units in its first four days on sale, crossed 10 million within four months, and finished its first year within striking distance of 20 million. Industry analysts confirmed that the Switch 2 was the fastest-selling video game hardware platform in tracked US history, outpacing even the PlayStation 4’s sales pace by 35% after seven months on the market.
Nintendo’s financial results told a similarly dramatic story. Net sales for the nine months ending December 2025 nearly doubled year-on-year, hitting 1.9 trillion Japanese yen — roughly $12.2 billion. On the software side, 37.93 million Switch 2 games were sold in that period alone, led by Mario Kart World at over 14 million copies and Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.25 million.
What’s Driving the Momentum Into 2026?
The late surge in sales was largely credited to the March 2026 launch of Pokémon Pokopia, which Nintendo described as a major system seller. Looking ahead, the lineup for the rest of 2026 is arguably even stronger. The Nintendo Direct in June confirmed a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, Kingdom Hearts IV as a day-one Switch 2 launch title, Xenoblade Genesis for 2027, and a packed slate of first and third-party titles scheduled across the second half of the year. Nintendo has lowered its forecast slightly for fiscal year 2027, citing that launch-year sales were more concentrated than previous hardware cycles, but it still projects 16.5 million additional units at the new price point — a figure that would represent a genuinely healthy second year for any console on the market.
