007 First Light — Bond Is Back and IO Interactive Has Delivered Something Special
It has been a long time since a James Bond game truly felt worthy of the franchise. IO Interactive, the studio behind the legendary Hitman trilogy, has changed that with 007 First Light — an origin story that puts a fresh spin on the world’s most famous spy. The game officially launched on May 27, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version confirmed for later in 2026. After years of anticipation since the project was first announced as “Project 007” back in 2020, the wait has been worth it.
The Story, the Cast, and What Makes This Bond Different
007 First Light follows a 26-year-old James Bond — long before he becomes the polished, unflappable agent audiences know — serving as a Royal Navy air crewman when a heroic act earns him a recruitment offer from MI6’s revived 00 programme. The story tracks his early days as an agent in training, working under mentor John Greenway while pursuing a rogue former agent known as 009 and unravelling a wider conspiracy. The game is a completely standalone continuity — no connection to any film series — giving IO Interactive the freedom to tell their own Bond story from scratch.
Patrick Gibson, best known for Dexter: Original Sin, voices and portrays the young Bond, and early impressions have praised his performance as convincing and appropriately rough around the edges. The supporting cast is equally impressive — Lennie James plays Greenway, Priyanga Burford steps in as M, and Alastair Mackenzie takes on Q. The most high-profile casting, however, is musician Lenny Kravitz as Bawma — the charismatic, unpredictable pirate king who controls Aleph, Africa’s largest black market hub. Kravitz described the character as someone who “rose from nothing, broke free, and built his own kingdom,” and his scenes with Bond have been cited as among the game’s most visually striking moments.
The gameplay leans into both stealth and action, featuring a “License to Kill” system that treats lethal force as a last resort rather than the default approach. Players can chain together hand-to-hand strikes, grapples, parries, and environmental takedowns, with gadgets — including a laser watch and various distraction tools — rounding out the spy toolkit. Classic Bond set pieces are all present, including globe-trotting locations, an Aston Martin, and high-speed vehicle sequences. Early previews described it as “an exquisite taste of slick spy action and blockbuster storytelling.”
What’s Coming Next — The Year One Roadmap
Summer Game Fest brought news that 007 First Light’s post-launch content is shaping up to be substantial. IO Interactive revealed a full Year One roadmap that includes a brand-new story DLC bringing Lenny Kravitz’s Bawma back for a mission set in Mauritania, this time with Bond already holding his 00 licence. The TacSim side mode — a tactical simulation challenge system familiar to Hitman fans — will receive a steady stream of new missions, including driving challenges set on Slovakia’s mountain slopes and a return to Kensington. Additional updates will add a photo mode, a New Game Plus option, and a significant technical upgrade introducing path tracing for PC players. Bond will also be getting G2 smartglasses as a brand-new gadget.
IO Interactive has also confirmed that a sequel is being considered if the response from players is strong enough — and given the reception so far, that bar appears well within reach. For Indian players picking this up on PC, the game is available now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
