New Casting Rumors Suggest Batman Part 2 Will Dive Deeper into Darkness
Speculation has been swirling for years about which villain director Matt Reeves might choose for his follow-up to The Batman, ranging from the tragic sci-fi horror of Mr. Freeze to the shadowy machinations of the Court of Owls. Recent buzz around The Batman Part II is gaining traction, and while these reports are still unconfirmed, they provide an intriguing look at what Reeves might have in store for Gotham City.
An independent source has suggested that Sebastian Stan could be cast as the deranged serial killer Victor Zsasz, with Brian Tyree Henry potentially taking on the role of the politician-turned-villain Harvey Dent. Neither of these casting choices has been officially confirmed, so they remain speculative for now. However, if true, it indicates that Reeves is likely to maintain the dark, crime-driven atmosphere that made the first film resonate with audiences.
Victor Zsasz holds a unique position in Batman’s rogues gallery. While he’s a familiar face in comics, animation, and video games, he’s not typically a fan favorite. His unsettling gimmick involves marking his skin for every victim he claims, lacking the theatricality of the Joker or the tragic depth of Mr. Freeze. This makes him a fitting choice for The Batman Part II, aligning perfectly with the grim tone of Reeves’s vision.
The first installment of The Batman leaned more towards a detective thriller than a traditional superhero film, drawing inspiration from classics like Se7en and Zodiac. The Riddler was reimagined as a serial killer, and Batman was portrayed as an investigator in a city plagued by corruption. In this context, Zsasz feels like a natural fit rather than an unexpected selection.
There are also whispers that Colin Farrell’s Penguin might appear in flashbacks related to Zsasz’s backstory. While this is unconfirmed, it aligns with certain interpretations of Zsasz’s origins, particularly in the 1996 story where his descent into madness begins after losing his fortune at Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge, igniting his murderous impulses.
If Reeves is indeed exploring this angle, it would reinforce a recurring theme in both The Batman and The Penguin: Gotham’s villains are products of the city’s criminal underbelly rather than mere victims of freak accidents or comic book science. This makes the potential inclusion of Harvey Dent particularly intriguing.
Initially, Dent is not a villain but a prosecutor and politician striving for justice in Gotham. If Henry is cast in this role, it could set the stage for a long-term Two-Face arc, rather than rushing into the character’s more familiar criminal persona. This wouldn’t be the first time a Black actor has portrayed Gotham’s future district attorney; Billy Dee Williams played Dent in Tim Burton’s Batman, although plans changed before he could transition to Two-Face.
For now, everything remains speculative. Until there’s an official announcement, we can’t be certain that Stan will play Zsasz or that Henry will take on Dent. In fact, there’s no guarantee either character will appear in the film at all, but the rumors are certainly exciting. If they hold any truth, it suggests that Reeves is not ready to leave Gotham’s darkest corners behind, which may disappoint fans eager for a dive into the more eccentric aspects of Batman’s lore.
What we can take away from the current speculation is that The Batman Part II is shaping up to be one of the Caped Crusader’s most intense and grounded narratives yet, set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
