Threads Reaches 500 Million Monthly Users
Threads has officially crossed the 500 million mark for monthly active users, as announced by Meta on Tuesday, just before the platform’s third anniversary. Launched in 2023, Threads quickly gained traction, reaching 100 million users faster than ChatGPT, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes the platform has the potential to reach 1 billion users.
According to Meta, daily active users on Threads are experiencing significant growth worldwide, primarily fueled by communities that enable users to engage with and post about various topics. The company is moving these communities out of beta and is set to introduce features like a dedicated communities hub in the Threads menu, along with unique visual identities for each community. While Meta still decides which topics receive dedicated communities—reportedly over 200 as of December—Threads’ head, Connor Hayes, mentioned that user-created communities could be a possibility within the next year.
Additionally, Threads is rolling out a new feature aimed at giving users greater control over their feed’s algorithm. Earlier this year, the platform introduced “Dear Algo,” allowing users to publicly express their content preferences. Now, with the launch of “Your Algo,” users can privately indicate what changes they’d like to see in their algorithm. This feature is beginning to roll out in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
