Hellraiser joins the packed lineup of October game releases.

Pinhead is making his comeback just in time for Halloween with the release of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival on October 8 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. This latest installment in Barker’s iconic franchise is a survival-horror experience developed by Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games.

In Hellraiser: Revival, players step into the shoes of Aidan Lynch, voiced by Xalavier Nelson Jr., the head of game developer Strange Scaffolding. Aidan encounters a mysterious puzzle box that unleashes the sadomasochistic Cenobites. When his girlfriend Sunny decides to join them in Hell, Aidan embarks on a harrowing quest to rescue her. Expect to see Pinhead, the franchise’s infamous figure, as Aidan navigates a mix of survival horror and action, battling and evading his demonic adversaries.

The standard edition of Hellraiser: Revival will be priced at $39.99, while the deluxe version will retail for $49.99.

For those new to the Hellraiser universe, it originated from Clive Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart and features some unsettling psychosexual themes. Barker wrote and directed the original 1987 film, which spawned ten sequels, many of which struggled to capture the magic of the first. The most recent film, Hellraiser (2022), received positive reviews despite being released directly to streaming.

Hellraiser: Revival is entering a crowded game release schedule, particularly as many developers are avoiding the impact of Grand Theft Auto 6’s release on November 19. September and October are packed with titles, including Marvel’s Wolverine (Sept. 15), Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (Sept. 17), Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 (Sept. 17), Control Resonant (Sept. 24), Silent Hill: Townfall (Sept. 24), and Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Sept. 25).

Early October is just as busy, featuring Rayman Legends Retold (Oct. 1), Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (Oct. 2), Gears of War: E-Day (Oct. 6), Star Wars: Galactic Racer (Oct. 6), Valor Mortis (Oct. 13), and Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (Oct. 15).

While it’s understandable that many games are aiming for a holiday sales boost, releasing so many notable titles in a short span seems risky. With Grand Theft Auto 6 launching in the third week of November, it raises questions about why so many are choosing to dive into this competitive fall landscape instead of strategically timing their releases. Interestingly, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is set to launch on November 3, bravely standing against this gaming giant.
