SanDisk Unveils $3,800 PS5 SSD, Highlighting Rising Gaming Costs

SanDisk Corporation, now under the Western Digital umbrella, has just dropped the price for its newly unveiled “Optimus GX PRO” SSD line, and the 8TB heatsink version is priced at an eye-watering $3,828.99. That’s nearly $3,000 more than the PlayStation 5 Pro, the very console it’s meant to enhance.

The announcement hit their website earlier today, and judging by the reactions across social media, the price has left gamers unimpressed. Surely, there must be some niche application for the Optimus GX PRO that justifies this outrageous cost, right?

Over 2000 dollars?! Seriously? I picked up a 4TB drive for just 180 Euros two years ago! ????

If there is a valid reason, it’s hard to see it. Users on ResetEra have pointed out that this “new” model bears a striking resemblance to the WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD, which has been around for four years. Both boast 6,600MB/s sequential write speeds, 4,800 TBW endurance, and 1,200K IOPS—wait a minute, even the weight and dimensions match. Is this just a rebranded SSD?

So, if there’s no clear distinction between these two drives, why is the Optimus GX PRO priced about $700 higher than the WD_BLACK model? Who knows? But here’s a fun tidbit: SanDisk was selling the same 8TB WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD with heatsink for $579.99 back in November 2024.

Not that anyone asked, but

$2,959.99 converts to R$15,100.00

which means you could support a family of three for nearly a year with that cash. Ridiculous.

Here’s another interesting point: SanDisk’s stock valuation has skyrocketed more than tenfold since October 2025. They’re clearly in a tight spot, so they want you to shell out $700 more for the same 8TB SSD to help their investors sleep a little easier.

I understand that the relentless demand for SSDs and RAM to fuel AI data centers is driving up storage prices. But when I mentioned back in March that things were only going to get worse, I didn’t expect it to escalate to this level. How is anyone supposed to build a modern gaming PC in 2027 without taking out a second mortgage? Oh wait—housing is so unaffordable now that it’s not even an option. How will anyone manage to build a gaming rig in 2027 without selling off their Pokémon cards?

Honestly, I’m at a loss. I’d say I’m logging off, but I’m using my PC to write this, so I’ll just head to another room to unwind once I’m done. I can’t risk crashing near the priciest item I own. By 2035, we might all have to pool our resources to buy a new gaming PC just to take turns playing Resident Evil 10. This is frustrating. Thanks a lot, SanDisk.
