Double Fine Responds to Xbox Shutdown Speculation with Just One Emoji
The future of Double Fine Productions, a studio with over 25 years of history that became part of Microsoft in 2018, is looking increasingly uncertain as the tech giant rethinks its console strategy and considers the fate of the studio behind Psychonauts 2. With talks about potentially spinning off or shutting down several smaller Xbox studios, Double Fine has responded in true fashion.
While the San Francisco-based studio hasn’t commented on the ongoing negotiations, it did share a lighthearted acknowledgment on social media: a single sweat smile emoji. Microsoft is also in discussions regarding the future of Compulsion and Ninja Theory.

Last year, the studio released Keeper, a fantastic adventure game that didn’t quite capture the audience it deserved. Earlier this spring, they launched Kiln, a fun pottery party game that also flew under the radar. These titles exemplify the kind of unique, experimental genre mashups that fans expect from Double Fine, especially in a gaming landscape filled with sequels and imitations. Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft may no longer be willing to support this creative vision financially.
The documentary chronicling the development of Psychonauts 2 offered an honest look at the studio during its acquisition in 2019. While the sale raised concerns about Double Fine’s independence and the creative freedom of its team, it also brought financial stability and some bonuses to developers who had persevered through challenging times.
“Being independent for almost 20 years has given Double Fine a distinct identity and unique spirit that goes really deep here, and no one can change that. And nobody wants to,” studio head Tim Schafer remarked in 2019. “Microsoft wants us for who we are and the kind of games we’re already making.”
