GTA 5 to Receive Significant Free Upgrade for PS4 and Xbox One Players
Rockstar Games is set to launch a significant update this week for Grand Theft Auto 5 players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, allowing them to upgrade to the latest console versions at no cost. This announcement was made on Wednesday, and it also includes new features exclusive to PC players who own the “Legacy” version of the game.
Starting Thursday, June 18, players with any PS4 version or the digital version on Xbox One can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X version for free. This upgrade promises to deliver “the best versions” of both GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online. Additionally, Rockstar is gearing up for a major update to GTA Online, the Kortz Center Heist, set to launch in July.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online come packed with “vast technical improvements, seamless migration of your Story Mode and Online progress, and new features like Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, along with Career Progress rewards.”
In 2022, Rockstar released “expanded and enhanced versions” of both GTA 5 and GTA Online for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, showcasing a variety of technical enhancements, visual upgrades, and performance boosts that leverage the new hardware capabilities, making the game more stunning and responsive than ever.
PC players can also enjoy all the technical upgrades, including exclusive features like ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, by upgrading from the Legacy version to the Enhanced version for free. These Enhanced updates for PC were rolled out in March 2025.
Another compelling reason to upgrade to the current-gen console versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online is that Rockstar plans to launch Grand Theft Auto 6 this November. (A PC version has yet to be confirmed.)
Originally released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 saw its PS4 and Xbox One versions debut in 2014, followed by a Windows PC version in 2015. Rockstar has consistently provided updates for GTA 5 and GTA Online, introducing new content and technical improvements, keeping it among the most-played games on PC. The Legacy version of GTA 5 still boasts around 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, while the Enhanced version regularly sees about 80,000 concurrent players.
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track for a November 19 release, a date that other publishers are keen to steer clear of.
