New Releases for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 Set for This Summer

Two iconic entries in the Call of Duty franchise are making a comeback this summer. Treyarch has announced that both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be making their way to unspecified PlayStation platforms in July. The development of these rereleases is being handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio known for its expertise in game ports and support.

Treyarch has confirmed that the PlayStation versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will feature the complete package, including each game’s campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.

This announcement aligns with a leak from May, where new ratings for Black Ops and Black Ops 2 were discovered on Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee. While those ratings didn’t specify platforms, there have been ongoing rumors suggesting that new versions of the first two Black Ops games would be available on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2. As of now, only the PlayStation versions have been officially confirmed.

Details about the rereleases are still emerging, and it’s uncertain whether the PlayStation ports will introduce any new features or support crossplay with existing platforms.

Originally launched in 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops was available on PlayStation 3, Wii, Windows PC, and Xbox 360, while Black Ops 2 followed in 2012 on PS3, Wii U, Windows PC, and Xbox 360. Both titles can currently be found on PC via Steam, and the Xbox 360 versions are playable through backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Activision has previously revisited a classic Call of Duty title with 2016’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which provided a polished update to 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The latest installment in the Black Ops series is 2025’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Despite being a bestseller for Activision and Treyarch, its lukewarm reception prompted the developers to reconsider their strategy for future Call of Duty releases.

In addition, Activision has recently announced a new title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, set to launch on October 23. This installment is described as taking place in a “rapidly escalating global conflict centered on the Korean Peninsula,” according to developer Infinity Ward. Modern Warfare 4 will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, marking the first Call of Duty release on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U.
