Following the success of Backrooms, Hollywood is exploring Reddit for its next big project.
It looks like Hollywood is on the hunt for the next viral Reddit story to adapt into a blockbuster, especially after Kane “Pixels” Parsons’ Backrooms film grossed over $240 million worldwide on a shoestring budget.
Reports indicate that at least one agency in Tinseltown has staff members scouring Reddit and its various subreddits for the next big idea that could replicate the success of Backrooms. An insider from the agency mentioned they’ve already pinpointed several subreddits and short stories that could translate well to the big screen. It’s likely that other agencies are following suit.
The phenomenal success of Backrooms has led some in Hollywood to believe that the next major filmmaker and franchise might not come from comic books or video games, but rather from the creative minds behind Reddit or YouTube series.
Notably, a story that originated on the NoSleep subreddit is being adapted into a feature film starring Sydney Sweeney. If this project, titled I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, achieves box office success similar to Backrooms, we could see a surge of films inspired by Reddit and YouTube content. This trend could usher in a wave of young talent with innovative ideas, helping Hollywood reconnect with younger audiences who have been drifting away from traditional theatrical releases.
As for Backrooms, Parsons is already discussing a sequel, which A24 is likely eager to produce as soon as possible.
