Jim Carrey to Reprise His Role as the Grinch in Upcoming Sequel 25 Years Later

Get ready for a festive surprise: Jim Carrey and Ron Howard are reuniting for a sequel to the beloved 2000 live-action hit, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

On June 18, it was reported that Universal and Imagine Entertainment are working on a follow-up to the iconic Grinch film. The exciting news is that Carrey is in discussions to step back into the role of the infamous Grinch. Howard will not only produce but also return to direct the new installment.

As of now, the sequel doesn’t have a title. The script is being crafted by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, who previously collaborated on the live-action adaptation of another Dr. Seuss classic, 2003’s The Cat in the Hat, featuring Mike Myers. This trio has also contributed to popular series like Barry, Dave, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Veep.

Carrey, who has been somewhat retired but makes occasional comebacks for the Sonic films, has expressed interest in reprising his role as the Grinch. However, he suggested using motion-capture technology instead of enduring the challenging makeup and costume that made portraying the Christmas-hating character quite a task.

“It was an extremely excruciating process,” Carrey shared in 2024. “The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

The original Grinch film featuring Carrey was a box office triumph, raking in $345 million globally. Since its release, it has become a staple of holiday viewing, solidifying its place in Christmas culture. With the recent trend of nostalgia-driven projects, it makes sense to capitalize on this success while the original team is still on board. Will this sequel capture the magic of the first? Only time will tell, but the holiday season is known for its surprises…
