Pikachu Takes Center Stage During Bowen Yang’s Powerful ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All’ Performance
It’s a fact that every millennial can belt out the Pokémon theme song “Gotta Catch ‘Em All,” a point hilariously showcased by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers at the recent Las Culturistas Culture Awards.
When Pikachu snagged the “Las Cultch 30 Under 30” award, beating out tough contenders like “Windows 98,” “Moo Deng,” and “a baby,” the comedic duo jumped into the iconic anthem alongside the beloved mascot. As the curtain lifted, the world’s most famous rodent (sorry, Mickey) made a grand entrance, with clips from the original series playing in the background. The co-hosts showcased their theatrical chops, hitting every note with flair.
The performance also featured some delightful nods for fans, as the backup dancers were dressed as characters from the games, including Leaf, Lyra, Hilda, Elio, and Red. The audience was clearly enjoying the show.
For those unfamiliar, Las Culturistas is a podcast hosted by Yang, known for his roles on Saturday Night Live and Wicked, alongside Rogers. Since 2016, they’ve welcomed a variety of guests, including big names like Will Ferrell, Lady Gaga, and Michelle Yeoh.
The Las Culturistas Culture Awards is a playful take on the often over-the-top award season, presenting a lineup of 100 completely real and not fake awards, such as “Top Fact About Greta Gerwig That You May Not Know,” “Best Space – Excellence in Outer Space,” and “What to Say When the Group Picture Is Taking a Bit Too Long.” Now in its fifth year, this was the event’s second airing on Bravo, and it’s also available for streaming on Peacock.
While the broadcast didn’t cover all 100 awards, it highlighted the ones that truly counted, like the “Yesssssssss!!!! Award for Girl We Learned About This Year (And Loved).” Sadly, Peetsa (pronounced “Pizza”) missed out on the “Most Beautiful Name for a Daughter You Haven’t Even Thought of Yet.” There’s always next year to aim for that win.
Ranked from best to very best, like no one ever was.
