Bloodborne Achieves 120 FPS on PS5 Thanks to Modding Community
Bloodborne, the iconic soulslike from FromSoftware that has been somewhat overlooked, can now run at 120 FPS on PlayStation hardware, but there’s a catch: you’ll need a modded PlayStation 5 to make it happen.
For those with powerful PCs, achieving 120 FPS in Bloodborne has been feasible for some time using the PlayStation 4 emulator ShadPS4. However, many players have longed to experience Bloodborne at more than its locked 30 FPS on native consoles. Given the rising costs of building a gaming PC, this desire has become more of a necessity.
Officially, Bloodborne remains capped at 30 FPS on PlayStation hardware. Unofficially, players have been able to run it at 60 FPS on a PlayStation 4 for years through jailbreaking. Unfortunately, pushing it to 120 FPS seems out of reach for the nearly 13-year-old console, which is where the PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility comes into play.
A report indicates that a new mod for Bloodborne by a modder known as Christina will enable a stable 120 FPS on jailbroken PlayStation 5s. This mod utilizes a frame-rate unlock patch, allowing Bloodborne to leverage the PS5’s 120Hz mode at 1080p resolution. Additionally, it’s mentioned that players can boost Bloodborne’s rendering resolution to full 4K, but this would revert the frame rate back to 30 FPS.
While Christina’s Bloodborne mod isn’t available just yet, it’s expected to be released soon. However, it’s important to note that this is only possible on a modded PlayStation 5 or an unpatched PS5 running firmware from before 2022. It’s intriguing that such enhancements are achievable on PlayStation hardware, raising questions about why 60 FPS support (let alone 120 FPS) hasn’t been officially provided for the game on PlayStation 5.
