Major Overhaul Arrives in World of Warcraft with Midnight’s First Patch

Blizzard has unveiled an exciting preview of the upcoming content and changes set to arrive in World of Warcraft with the first major update of the Midnight expansion cycle. Patch 12.1, titled Curse of Ula’tek, is expected to drop later this summer, and the development notes for the early version heading to the Public Test Realm (PTR) provide a comprehensive overview of what players can anticipate. And it’s shaping up to be quite substantial.

Curse of Ula’tek continues the Midnight storyline, introducing new chapters that also advance the Zul’jan questline from the recent 12.0.7 patch. Adventurers will discover a new island off the coast of Zul’Aman, known as the Coiled Isle, which features a “corrupted ecosystem filled with poisonous waters and venomous foes.” While exploring the Coiled Isle, players can take advantage of custom talent trees, participate in numerous public events, and engage in the new Cursed Fishing activity.

In addition to a new raid (The Venomous Abyss), a dungeon (Altar of Fangs), and three new Delves, the patch will introduce Lairs. These are a fresh take on world bosses, offering instanced encounters where players can select difficulty levels and summon allies.

Player housing is set for a significant revamp, featuring the ability to save and share creations through Blueprints, pet beds to showcase beloved companions, a streamlined dye crafting system with new color options, and an increased housing level cap of 12, along with expanded limits and larger exteriors. Discord integration is also on the way, allowing players to link their Discord and Battle.net accounts for seamless communication.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of these early patch notes is the preview of proposed class changes. While these are still subject to adjustment before the final release, they indicate the direction the game is taking. The key focus is on making high-level combat feel less erratic and more rewarding for healers by boosting player health and enemy damage, while also smoothing out player damage by reducing the impact of some major DPS cooldowns and enhancing regular damage output.

While a specific release date for patch 12.1 hasn’t been announced yet, August is looking like a strong possibility.
