Transform Your Phone into a Game Boy Camera!

The $50 GB Operator is a nifty accessory that allows you to connect, play, and authenticate Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges on PCs and other devices. Recently, it has gained new functionality for the Game Boy Camera. After transforming the Game Boy Camera into a delightfully quirky desktop webcam two years ago, the creators at Epilogue have now launched a mobile app for iOS and Android, enabling you to snap photos while the GB Operator is linked to your smartphone.

When it debuted in 1998, the Game Boy Camera was far from impressive, capturing images at a mere 0.01434 megapixels in just four shades of gray. Photos were stuck on your Game Boy unless you printed them or used a third-party cable to extract them. However, its accessibility and affordability at $90 made it appealing, which is part of why Epilogue’s solution for using the camera with modern devices is so attractive.

The GB Operator isn’t free, but when combined with the new Flashback app and your phone, it offers a more budget-friendly alternative to pricier devices like the $240 Analogue Pocket that also support the Game Boy Camera. The app pulls data directly from the Game Boy Camera’s aging Mitsubishi M64282FP sensor, ensuring that the images you capture with the accessory look just like they did decades ago. Plus, the app enhances the experience beyond what the original Game Boy offered, allowing adjustments to settings like shutter speed, gain, exposure, sharpness, dither, and grain, along with the option to apply one of 32 different color palettes.

If you don’t have a Game Boy Camera or the GB Operator, the Flashback app also includes a software mode that mimics the accessory’s features. Photos taken with your smartphone’s camera are processed and output as low-res 128 x 112-pixel images with dithering and a limited color palette. Whether using the actual Game Boy Camera or the app’s simulation mode, the images you create are saved in your phone’s Camera Roll, making them easy to access and share.
