Hue’s Wired Wall Modules Integrate Non-Smart Lights into Its System
Philips Hue has introduced its first wired wall modules, designed to be installed behind existing wall switches. This innovation allows traditional non-smart lights to join the Hue ecosystem for the very first time. Alongside this, new Play table and floor lamps have been unveiled, offering more budget-friendly options compared to the Signe series. Additionally, the E14 candle bulbs have received upgrades, enhancing their white light spectrum and adding Matter-over-Thread compatibility.
These new lighting options are available worldwide, but the Wired Wall Switch Modules are currently exclusive to Europe. The company’s CTO, George Yianni, mentioned that there are no immediate plans to release them in the US, although they would consider it if there’s sufficient demand. He noted that DIY modules aren’t as common in the US market, where fully integrated switches are more prevalent. “If people really want these in the US, then maybe we’ll look at it. I think the modules are quite exciting; it’s something that we’ve talked about doing for a long time.”
The modules function as in-wall relays, allowing users to control any non-smart light connected to them, such as recessed or pendant lights, through the Hue app alongside Hue’s smart bulbs. While other companies like Aqara and Shelly offer similar in-wall relays, these are the first to integrate with the Hue app.
There are three versions of the Hue Wired Wall Switch Modules, starting at €44.99: a 1-channel module for single-rocker switches, a 2-channel module for double-rocker switches, and a dimmer module. A fourth option is a wired version of Hue’s existing battery-powered wall module, enabling control of Hue lights via your current light switch. Unlike the relay modules, this one is compatible with Hue’s MotionAware and can be integrated into the new whole-home motion-sensing system.
The new Play Table Lamp ($79.99 / €79.99) and Play Floor Lamp Large ($149.99 / €149.99) serve as more affordable alternatives to the Signe lamps. Tailored for Hue’s entertainment ecosystem, they can sync with movies, music, and games through the Philips Hue Sync Box or Hue Sync apps.
The candle bulbs are priced at $109.99 (€109.99) for a two-pack of white and color-changing lights. Enhancements include increased lumen output, a broader white light spectrum (1000-20,000K), and Hue’s Chromasync color technology. Ideal for decorative fixtures, chandeliers, and wall sconces, these bulbs can dim to 0.2% and now feature Matter-over-Thread technology, allowing direct pairing with ecosystems like Apple Home and Google Home without needing a Hue Bridge.
