Amazon MGM Cancels Sam Altman Film Project

Luca Guadagnino’s film, Artificial, centered on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has reportedly been shelved by Amazon MGM. The movie, featuring Andrew Garfield, chronicles a dramatic five-day period in 2023 that includes Altman’s firing and subsequent reinstatement. The cast also boasts Monica Barbaro, known for A Complete Unknown, as OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz portraying Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov from Anora as OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

In a statement, the studio expressed that the film “will be better served if it were released by a different studio” and is collaborating with the filmmakers to secure a new distribution partner. The decision not to move forward with the release was first reported by Puck. Notably, Amazon has strong connections with OpenAI, having announced a significant $50 billion investment in the AI lab earlier this year.
