Final Fantasy VII Director Emphasizes the Importance of Queer Romances for Authenticity in the Game World
The developers behind the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy aimed to craft a world that feels genuinely alive. To achieve this, they filled the environment with a variety of characters, each living their lives in ways that reflect real human experiences. As Cloud and his companions traverse the series, they encounter a vibrant array of queer background characters who embody game director Naoki Hamaguchi’s vision of authenticity. In a discussion, Hamaguchi emphasized that including queer relationships was essential for enhancing the realism of Midgar and beyond. He noted, “Rebirth is a game where you encounter many towns, cultures, and relationships throughout your journey. In my view, the presence of diverse, authentic relationships within that journey also enhances the world’s realism.”
In the game, there’s a storyline involving two women whose relationship begins with conflict but gradually evolves into a romantic connection. Players have observed their growing bond, and Hamaguchi expressed that this narrative choice was made with genuine intent rather than as a mere checkbox. “Our goal wasn’t to add a same-sex couple just for the sake of adding it,” he explained. “But to portray the stories of those inhabiting this world with sincerity and care.” It’s refreshing to see such a thoughtful approach to diversity in a Final Fantasy title. Just a few years back, Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XVI, faced criticism for his comments on the lack of diversity in that game, suggesting that incorporating ethnic diversity in a setting focused on epic monster battles would breach “narrative boundaries.” It’s encouraging to see a more considerate perspective emerging within the studio.
