Arkane’s Blade Game Emerges with Limited Updates

Arkane Lyon and Bethesda Softworks first revealed Marvel’s Blade nearly three years ago during the 2023 The Game Awards. Since then, both studios have kept a low profile, leading some fans to speculate whether the game had been quietly canceled after its absence from the recent Xbox Games Showcase. However, in a recent interview, Bethesda’s Todd Howard eased those concerns, confirming that the game is still in development.

In a conversation with an outlet discussing the current state of Xbox, Howard provided a brief update on Marvel’s Blade. While he couldn’t share specifics on when more information would be available, he mentioned that he had seen some recent developments and praised Arkane’s work, stating they are doing an “incredibly great job.”

Although Howard’s comments don’t reveal much, they are certainly more reassuring than the uncertainty surrounding other projects, including the long-awaited Blade movie from Marvel Studios.

It’s worth noting that Arkane may not have entered full production on Marvel’s Blade until late 2024, a year after its initial announcement. Given the extended timelines typical in game development today, it’s not surprising that updates are sparse at this stage. For context, consider Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine, which was announced in September 2021 and is set for release in September 2026—five years later.

Fans of superhero games have been feeling the wait. EA’s Black Panther game, announced in 2023, was set to introduce a new take on Monolith Productions’ Nemesis System but was ultimately canceled in 2025. Similarly, Monolith’s Wonder Woman game, also revealed at The Game Awards in 2021, faced cancellation along with the studio’s closure in 2025.

For now, Marvel’s Blade remains in development, and Arkane is making progress. No platforms were specified at the time of the announcement, so it could potentially be an Xbox-exclusive title or also make its way to PlayStation and/or Nintendo Switch 2, similar to Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. In the meantime, fans can enjoy Blade’s appearance in the ensemble game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which has received positive feedback.

Microsoft is also exploring the possibility of spinning off Xbox as it focuses on reinvesting in its major IPs under new leadership.
