Fan Mod Introduces Multiplayer Mode to The Last of Us Part 2
The Last of Us debuted during a time when shooters like Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 2 and 3 were packed with PvP multiplayer modes. Despite its strong narrative focus, The Last of Us included a multiplayer component that offered a fresh take on team deathmatch gameplay, which resonated well with players.
Initially, The Last of Us Part 2 was set to feature its own multiplayer mode, but that plan was scrapped in favor of developing it as a standalone game. Unfortunately, this project was never fully unveiled, and development ceased in 2023, leaving fans disappointed. However, a modder is stepping in to fill that gap.
Known as Speclizer, this creator has been working on a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 since January. Recently, they shared an exciting glimpse of the mod in action. While it still has some rough edges—like occasional frame rate drops and visual glitches—it showcases promising gameplay on both a custom map and one taken directly from the single-player campaign.
Speclizer aims to release the mod in September and has posted a series of videos detailing the development process for those interested in the behind-the-scenes work.
It’s important to note that this mod will only be available for PC players. They are fortunate that The Last of Us Part 2 made its way to PC when it did, as Sony has decided to keep future single-player titles as PlayStation exclusives.
For those on PlayStation 5, there’s still the option to revisit Ellie and Abby’s intense journey or try out the game’s roguelike mode, No Return, which offers a different experience from the main narrative.
And could Neil Druckmann be hinting at the potential for The Last of Us 3?
