Apple’s 2026 thriller is a hit, earning a second season before its debut.
Widow’s Bay has emerged as one of the standout series of the year. Created by Katie Dippold, the show recently concluded its first season, and a second season has already been greenlit due to its overwhelming popularity, with the renewal announced even before the finale aired.
The narrative centers around Mayor Tom Loftis, portrayed by Matthew Rhys, as he endeavors to revitalize the community of Widow’s Bay, a quaint New England island town that its residents believe is cursed. Throughout the series, Loftis grapples with technical issues like unreliable Wi-Fi and the challenge of attracting tourists, all while his skepticism is put to the test as some of the town’s eerie legends start to manifest.
The head of programming at Apple TV expressed excitement over the show’s renewal, noting how audiences have been captivated by the blend of mystery, humor, and supernatural elements crafted by Dippold, director Hiro Murai, and the entire team. The show has sparked widespread conversation, and there’s eagerness for the next season.
Dippold, who has a background in comedy and horror from her work on other series, hinted that the second season will explore the theme of the island appearing perfect, with no apparent issues. She has also secured a multiyear deal with the platform.
Widow’s Bay adds to Apple TV’s growing reputation for delivering exceptional genre television, joining the ranks of other acclaimed series.
The show is produced by Hiro Murai, who directed five episodes this season. The cast includes Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, and Kingston Rumi Southwick.
Murai shared his fascination with stories about characters feeling out of place, which resonates with the surreal horror elements of the show. He has previously worked on notable projects like Atlanta and Station Eleven.
He mentioned that one of the appealing challenges of Widow’s Bay was balancing its diverse tones, which he found both exciting and innovative.
As for season two, Murai expressed interest in exploring the character of Garrett, the lighthouse keeper, hinting at the potential for a dedicated episode focused on him.
The first season of Widow’s Bay is currently available for streaming.
