Tom Cruise’s Upcoming Film Features One of the Strangest Trailers in Recent Memory
Tom Cruise’s upcoming film, Digger, breaks away from the usual summer blockbuster mold of action-packed spectacles or sci-fi adventures. Instead, it seems to showcase him in a potentially villainous role, marking what could be his serious bid for an Oscar. The first trailer released by Warner Bros. is all about building excitement for Cruise, one of the last true movie stars, which feels a bit unusual.
On June 23, the studio dropped the first trailer for Digger, not counting a brief “title announcement” video from about six months ago. If you were hoping for a lengthy preview filled with scenes from the film, you might be let down. Although the teaser runs for around three minutes, it only features about 30 seconds of actual footage. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film portrays Cruise as a powerful oil tycoon grappling with the consequences of the “disaster he unleashed.” The trailer is being referred to as the “Tom Cruise Retrospective Trailer.”
It’s definitely an interesting approach! Personally, I’m excited to see Digger. I believe Cruise has a wider range as an actor than many realize, and this role seems crafted to allow him to explore something completely different. Even if it doesn’t hit the mark, it’s still more intriguing than another standard action sequel. He’s delivered plenty of those, many of which I enjoyed, but it feels like the right time for a change.
Joining Cruise in Digger are Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, and John Goodman. With Goodman and Plemons in the mix, I’m all in from day one. Cruise is just the cherry on top. Digger hits theaters this October.
