Marathon Introduces Exciting New PVE Mode Tailored for Solo Gamers
Bungie has unveiled an exciting new game mode for Marathon that shifts the focus away from PVP, introducing a fully PVE experience that promises to enhance gameplay without disrupting the loot economy or disadvantaging PVP enthusiasts.
On June 23, the Marathon development team shared a brief update detailing what players can anticipate in the coming weeks and months. The highlight is the upcoming addition of Vault Breaker on July 21, a fresh PVE-only mode set in the expansive Cryo Archive map, which is considered the best in the game. This mode is designed for solo players, duos, or trios.
Vault Breaker, described as experimental, invites players to navigate the Cryo Archive while tackling a series of progressively challenging vaults. Unlike traditional modes, players won’t carry over loot from matches, except for Vault Data, a new currency exclusive to this mode. As players progress in Vault Breaker, they can use this data to upgrade their Vault Breaker Sponsored Kit, enabling them to take on tougher vaults. Additionally, this data can be exchanged for gear usable in the broader game, though specifics on the gear remain under wraps.
The concept behind Vault Breaker is to provide a “low risk, high-power” PVE experience that allows players, including those who prefer solo play, to enjoy Cryo without overwhelming the economy with high-end gear and weapons. Although the economy might already be feeling the strain…
This new mode seems like a fantastic way to diversify Marathon and attract players who may shy away from the intense PVP action typical of extraction shooters. It maintains the integrity of the game’s economy and enhances the overall player experience.
In the same update, Bungie also hinted at an evolution of the Cradle system, which will introduce new cosmetic rewards and incentivize players to keep grinding. The Marathon team promises that the mid-season update in July will bring additional “quality-of-life, tuning, and other changes,” including updates to player profile stats.
Looking ahead, Bungie teased the upcoming third season of Marathon, set to launch on September 22. This season will introduce significant changes to the early game experience, including a revamped starting map, Perimeter, featuring major new areas, encounters, and gameplay elements. Players can also look forward to a new Runner shell, along with new weapons, gear, and plenty of other content and surprises.
Marathon continues to evolve, making it one of the standout titles of the year.
