GTA 6 Will Focus on Single-Player Gameplay, Future of Online Mode Remains Unclear
Rockstar Games has finally addressed some key questions surrounding the upcoming November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing details about pricing, special edition bonuses, and pre-loading information ahead of the pre-orders going live on June 25. One crucial point made clear in this update is that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a single-player experience.
This information is highlighted in the game descriptions on various platforms, along with a pre-order bonus: a complimentary month of GTA Plus, Rockstar’s subscription service that offers perks for Grand Theft Auto Online.
Here’s the official wording from Rockstar:
Receive a month of GTA+ with your pre-order; must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order. Subscription redemption is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content. You will receive a pop-up notification on your console when your GTA+ subscription month is available to redeem. Open the Store, select your profile icon in the top left corner, and select “Offers & credits” to find and redeem this offer. Limited to one redemption per Platform Account.
Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
GTA Plus subscribers will also gain access to the GTA Plus Games Library, which includes a selection of classic Rockstar titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
Rockstar’s confirmation that Grand Theft Auto 6 is exclusively a single-player experience raises questions about the future of Grand Theft Auto Online. This popular online mode has been a significant revenue source for Rockstar and is frequently updated with new content for its dedicated player base. A major update for GTA Online, titled The Kortz Center Heist, is set to launch in July. Rockstar shows no signs of reducing support for GTA Online, which is likely to coexist with GTA 6 for years to come.
When Grand Theft Auto 5 debuted in September 2013, it was also a single-player experience. However, Rockstar was simultaneously developing GTA Online, which launched just two weeks after the main game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, Rockstar has consistently updated GTA Online and even released it as a standalone download in 2021.

As time goes on, some of the innovative features of Grand Theft Auto 6 may eventually make their way to GTA Online. Rockstar is actively encouraging players to upgrade to the Enhanced versions of GTA 5 available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, with that update being offered for free. However, Rockstar and Take-Two are cautious about altering a successful formula; when GTA 6 finally launches this November, we may learn more about potential changes to GTA Online and perhaps even see that long-awaited PC version.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X on Nov. 19.
