Laura Bailey Introduces Her New ‘Hot, Big Fungril’ Character in Critical Role

On July 9, Critical Role is trading in its Dungeons & Dragons roots for something more personal with the launch of its new series, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands. This campaign will utilize Critical Role’s own tabletop RPG system, Daggerheart. Fans are also getting a sneak peek at Laura Bailey’s new character for the adventure.

While Dungeons & Dragons is celebrated for its blend of storytelling and mechanics, Daggerheart leans more heavily into narrative, allowing for immersive storytelling that creates both epic and chilling moments at the gaming table.

In Sallowlands, a band of adventurers will delve into the twisted, nightmarish realm of the Halcyon Domain. The cast features Laura Bailey (Dispatch), Jennifer English (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33), Vico Ortiz (Our Flag Means Death), Abubakar Salim (House of the Dragon), and Zachery Renauldo (Critical Role), with Matthew Mercer stepping back into the role of Game Master.

As the miniseries approaches, there are still many mysteries surrounding the cast and their characters. However, during an exclusive talk show, Bailey offered fans a tantalizing glimpse of her new character.

In a conversation with co-host and CEO Travis Willingham, Bailey described her character, Sister, a fungril witch, as distinct from her previous fungril character, Sweetpea Betabean. While Sweetpea was a charming rogue, Sister is portrayed as a “hot, big fungril” endowed with magical powers.

Bailey kept further details under wraps but hinted that all characters in Sallowlands have a “quite creepy” vibe. As a fan of horror, I’m eagerly anticipating the spine-tingling moments that await us in July.

From additional insights shared on social media, we know that Sister is a fungril hedge witch, designed in a grotesquely beautiful manner, resembling a mushroom that has been sunbaked. Salim’s character will also be a fungril, with a lineage tied to giants.

Drawing from Critical Role’s earlier Age of Umbra miniseries, Bailey’s hints, and Mercer’s previous descriptions of the setting as “Soulsborne-esque, super dark and deadly,” it’s clear that Sallowlands will deliver plenty of horrors. Fans will have to wait until July 9 to uncover just how much is in store.
