Barbarian, the breakout horror sensation, is set to receive a physical release ahead of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.
One of the standout horror films of recent years is finally making its way to physical media. Zach Cregger’s *Barbarian* will be available in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SteelBook this summer, following a dedicated campaign from the director. The highly anticipated release features striking artwork from Creepy Duck Design, showcasing the film’s eerie Airbnb against a dramatic red sky.
Fans will be thrilled with the bonus features included in *Barbarian’s* physical release. An audio commentary track featuring writer-director Zach Cregger and producer Roy Lee will provide insights into the film. Additionally, the feature titled *Behind Barbarian* will offer interviews with Cregger and the cast and crew, delving into the film’s key horror elements and inspirations. Deleted scenes will also be part of the package.
Cregger has been pushing for a physical release of *Barbarian* for years. “I have banged the drum, made phone calls, and tried my best to get some sort of physical media,” he expressed about a year ago. “I’m not making headway, and it kind of bums me out.” It seems his efforts finally resonated with someone at 20th Century Studios.
*Barbarian* marked Cregger’s directorial debut, quickly establishing him as a notable figure in the horror genre. The film garnered critical acclaim and grossed over $45 million against a $4.5 million budget. Cregger followed up with the even more successful *Weapons*, which raked in $270 million on a $38 million budget and received award-season recognition, a rarity for horror films. Amy Madigan’s performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
All eyes are now on Cregger’s upcoming project, *Resident Evil*, another adaptation of the popular game series that has sparked a mix of excitement and apprehension. While previous adaptations have faced criticism, Cregger’s involvement brings a sense of credibility. He’s a self-proclaimed fan of the games, and the film’s trailer cleverly nods to the classic gaming blunder of wasting ammo on a stationary lock.
This reboot will not follow the familiar characters like Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield. Instead, it focuses on an ordinary guy caught in the chaos of a zombie apocalypse, reminiscent of what it would be like for a player to find themselves in Raccoon City during the events of *Resident Evil 2*. The film hits theaters on September 18.
*Barbarian’s* physical release is set for August 11. The SteelBook edition will include both a 4K UHD Blu-ray and a standard Blu-ray disc. Audio options will feature English, French, and Spanish 5.1 DTS-HDMA, along with Dolby 2.0 Digital Descriptive Audio for English. Subtitles will be available in those languages as well.
It’s no longer available on Netflix and Max, and Amazon Video is next, so make sure to catch it while you can.
