A new Lilo and Stitch movie is set to debut this year.
Disney’s beloved 2002 film Lilo & Stitch made waves upon its release, spawning three direct-to-video sequels and a live-action remake. Now, the charming alien Stitch is set to make his theatrical comeback with a new animated short film, announced during the Annecy Festival.
Titled Lilo & Scratch, this short will debut ahead of Hexed, which hits screens on November 25. This marks Disney’s first new theatrical short in five years. Chris Sanders, who wrote and directed the original film and voiced Stitch, is back to reprise his role. Maia Kealoha, who portrayed Lilo in the live-action version, will lend her voice to the character in this new short.
Co-directors Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand collaborated on the project alongside Alex Cooper Schmidt, an animator from the original film. Schmidt created hand-drawn versions of Stitch for the short, which combines traditional CG animation with watercolor backgrounds crafted both by hand and digitally.

“Many people at our studio across multiple disciplines wanted to work with these characters,” Veerasunthorn shared during a panel at Annecy. “We collaborated with our amazing team to ensure every artist—whether using pencil, pixel, paintbrush, or synthetic pen—could contribute.”
The story kicks off with Stitch lounging on the couch next to Lilo’s pet fish, Pudge. When Lilo returns home with a surprise kitten named Scratch, she rushes off to find a welcome gift, leaving Stitch to deal with the mischievous cat, who has its sights set on Pudge. As Lilo confronts her new furry foe, it becomes clear that she has a knack for choosing unusual pets.
“What follows is a wild, chaotic chase across the island that culminates in a laser-blasting showdown between Stitch and Scratch throughout town,” said artistic director Malcon Pierce. “This is the kind of mayhem we adore with this character.”
