Long-standing Resident Evil mystery unveiled: Kyle MacLachlan confirmed as Jill Valentine’s boyfriend.

Three decades after the launch of Resident Evil 2, fans have finally uncovered the identity of STARS agent Jill Valentine’s romantic interest during the Raccoon City incident: it’s none other than Kyle MacLachlan, known for his roles in Twin Peaks and Fallout. This revelation comes despite Capcom’s later retconning of the relationship, making the discovery that “Jill’s friend” is the original silver screen Muad’Dib both surprising and exciting.

In the original Resident Evil 2 and its various ports, players can catch a glimpse of Jill’s desk in the STARS office at the Raccoon City Police Department. There, a framed photo sits prominently, prompting comments from Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield: “It’s a picture of a young man. There’s a good chance it’s her boyfriend…”

For nearly 28 years, fans have speculated about the identity of the man in that photo and whether Jill was indeed dating him. It took the dedicated research of a fan, who has been cataloging background art in Capcom’s games, to finally solve the mystery. Recently, a Resident Evil enthusiast known as Morio announced, “Alright, that’s it then. The guy from Jill’s desk is Kyle MacLachlan. Years of searching finally over.”

The photo identified by Morio is a pin-up from a vintage Japanese movie magazine, likely the long-running Roadshow. MacLachlan graced the cover of Roadshow in 1992 to promote Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. The image used in Resident Evil 2 references his upcoming role in the 1993 film The Trial, an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s novel.

Interestingly, the pin-up photo appears to originate from a shoot MacLachlan did for Subaru, as he was a spokesperson for the Subaru Impreza in the early ’90s, featuring in promotional materials for the brand. He also endorsed another Japanese product during that time, promoting Georgia canned coffee as his Twin Peaks character, Agent Dale Cooper.

Debate has persisted over whether Jill Valentine had a boyfriend at the time. Some players interpret the interaction with the framed photo as Claire and Leon merely assuming the man is her boyfriend. However, in a 2019 playthrough of the original Resident Evil 2, game director Hideki Kamiya referred to the young man as Jill’s boyfriend and hinted at his identity.

“This is supposed to be Jill’s boyfriend, but in the remake, it’s her dog,” Kamiya stated, as translated by Resident Evil expert Alex Aniel. “[I] would have been fine if they left the boyfriend in the other one. Nobody knows who he is… Sorry, guys.”

Clearly, Claire and Leon are unaware of his identity, which is plausible given that MacLachlan wasn’t at the peak of his fame in 1998, the year Resident Evil 2 is set. Leading up to the game’s release, he starred in projects like Showgirls and The Flintstones, along with several made-for-TV movies, including The Trial. Twin Peaks had been off the air since 1991.

Morio also pointed out in a video that the STARS office is filled with photos of Hollywood celebrities. One desk features a framed picture of Winona Ryder in The Age of Innocence, while other corkboards showcase images from Back to the Future Part 3, Maverick, and Benny & Joon.

When Capcom remade Resident Evil 2 in 2019, Jill’s “friend” was transformed from (allegedly) Kyle MacLachlan into a cheerful Golden Retriever, officially swapping the “boyfriend” for “woman’s best friend.” During a 2019 roundtable discussion featuring the remake team, developers explained the change.

“In the original, it was like her boyfriend,” said an unidentified member of the RE2 remake team. “This time, after some thought, we made her boyfriend a dog. And everyone likes dogs, don’t they?”

Indeed, that seems to be the case.

Attempts to reach out to Kyle MacLachlan’s publicist for comments on any potential relationship with Jill Valentine in the late ’90s have been made. However, a 2000 article noted that MacLachlan ended his relationship with girlfriend Linda Evangelista in 1998, leaving a gap in his dating history.

Updates will follow if MacLachlan’s team provides any additional insights.
