Supergirl Features Moments That Might Be Tough for Dog Lovers

Hey there, fellow dog enthusiasts! Let’s dive into the world of Supergirl. If you’ve caught any glimpses of the trailers for the latest installment in James Gunn’s DC Universe, you’ll know it revolves around a revenge plot where Kara is on a mission to save her super pup, Krypto, who gets poisoned by Krem of the Yellow Hills, the head of a space pirate crew known as the Brigands. If you’re like me and can’t stand seeing our furry friends in distress, you might be a bit apprehensive about watching Supergirl. While I won’t spoil anything major, we can discuss Krypto’s role in the film so you can decide whether to catch it in theaters or wait for it to hit streaming.

Krypto’s poisoning kicks off Kara’s intergalactic quest for vengeance, but surprisingly, the dog doesn’t have as much screen time as you might think, considering his importance to the story. Early on, we see Kara and Krypto enjoying themselves, partying and exploring alien worlds where there are no yellow suns, meaning she’s not powered up and can actually feel the effects of alcohol. Their relationship starts off on a fun note, but things take a turn when Krem shows up to hijack her ship. Krypto, being the good boy he is, tries to thwart the pirates and ends up getting hit with a poisoned dart. The scene is quick and pretty clear, so you can easily look away if you want.

However, the moments where Krypto suffers from the poison are drawn out and intense. Kara rushes him to a local healer, who reveals that this poison is part of the Brigands’ interrogation tactics, slowly debilitating their targets while dangling the antidote as leverage. This sets Kara on a mission to track down Krem across various planets to retrieve the antidote and save Krypto.

Watching Krypto in pain on the healer’s table is tough, but Supergirl doesn’t reach the unbearable levels of animal suffering seen in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Krypto’s condition looms over Kara throughout the film, but you won’t see him actively dying on screen. There’s a lot of tension surrounding his fate, and one scene where Kara fears she might not make it back to him in time to say goodbye really hit hard. Overall, while there are a few moments that might be difficult to watch, it’s manageable, and you should be able to stick it out until the end.

And for those wanting the big reveal, here it is:

Kara successfully retrieves the antidote and saves Krypto. So, no need to worry!
