Critical Role CEO addresses major misunderstanding surrounding The Legend of Vox Machina.

The fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina may have wrapped up, but fans—known as Critters—still have a ton of questions about the animated series based on Critical Role’s original Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

Fortunately, Critical Role’s CEO, Travis Willingham, and co-founder and executive producer, Laura Bailey, recently tackled some of these queries during a Fireside Chat episode. This exclusive talk show engages with questions submitted by fans through the company’s Discord server. Alongside discussions about potential future projects—possibly including a Critical Role What If… series—Willingham and Bailey shared insights into the behind-the-scenes workings of The Legend of Vox Machina.

One intriguing question posed was whether there were any scenes in the animated series that the team had to advocate for. Willingham took this opportunity to clarify any misconceptions about who drives the creative direction of Critical Role’s animated adaptations, emphasizing that it’s not Amazon calling the shots.

“I think people might have the wrong idea. We are making the show; it is us,” Willingham stated. “It’s not a group of writers taking what we did and saying, ‘Oh, that’s good.’ We’re in there, cracking everything open, throwing in surprises, adding things, doing the trims, all that stuff.”

He further explained that while Critical Role is responsible for crafting the story and pitching ideas, Amazon has been supportive of their vision. So, if any Critters are feeling uneasy about certain changes, it’s clear that Amazon’s involvement isn’t to blame.

However, Bailey did mention one aspect she had to advocate for: the inclusion of Vex’s beloved armored bear, Trinket. Given the ongoing joke among fans about Bailey’s affection for Trinket, it’s no surprise that she was eager to see him featured prominently. In the series, Trinket is often kept inside a magical locket, emerging only during key moments, like battles or when lounging outside Percy and Vex’s room. Willingham explained that the animation studio, Titmouse, requested the Critical Role team to minimize Trinket’s appearances due to the complexity of animating a large quadruped alongside the six bipedal characters.

While this may not be the most thrilling reason for Trinket’s limited screen time, it does highlight the challenges of animation—juggling multiple character movements can be quite the task.

All four seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina are currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
