Samsung to Introduce Fees for Accessing Smart Home API
Starting in October, Samsung is set to introduce a range of new paid tiers for accessing its SmartThings API, featuring a $4.99 monthly option aimed at “non-commercial, individual developers.” However, this change won’t only impact developers; more advanced smart home enthusiasts might find themselves affected as well. Those who directly tap into the SmartThings API for enhanced smart home controls or utilize third-party tools could run into issues. Paulus Schoutsen, the founder of the open-source smart home platform Home Assistant, noted in a blog post that the integration with Home Assistant will be impacted by these changes and will fall under the new “personal plans.” Samsung claims that this new pricing structure will enable them to “invest heavily in the enterprise-grade features our partners and users have been asking for,” which includes stability enhancements, new integrations, and an overhaul of their Developer Center hub.
