Stardew Valley Developer Shares Progress on Upcoming Game Sequel
Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the mastermind behind Stardew Valley, openly acknowledges that announcing his next game too early might not have been the best move. Haunted Chocolatier was unveiled in 2021, with development kicking off a year earlier, yet five years later, it remains in the works with no imminent release in sight. Barone empathizes with the frustration that comes from prolonged anticipation, but he emphasizes that there’s a reason for the extended development timeline.
“I know it’s taking a long time,” Barone expressed in a recent blog update. “Feels kinda dumb posting this same thing over and over, but that’s the reality.” This sentiment echoes his previous update from January, which also touched on the lengthy development period. In that same post, he reflected on whether he should have revealed the game as early as he did.
The reason for the prolonged development, according to Barone, lies in the ongoing refinement of the game’s various systems.
“The elements that players will frequently interact with need to be ‘perfect,'” he explained. “They must be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, and aesthetically pleasing.”
Haunted Chocolatier, much like Stardew Valley, is a cozy life-simulation game centered around managing a business and forging connections with local residents. However, Barone describes this new venture as “more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley,” suggesting a stronger emphasis on combat. The game also shifts focus from farming to running a chocolate shop, while both titles share a charming pixelated, top-down art style.
One significant aspect of interaction is the recipe book for crafting chocolates, which Barone highlights.
“This is a UI you will be using fairly often, so it has to be perfect,” he stated. This involves fine-tuning elements like the number of clicks required to navigate the interface and the type of information presented. Barone insists that the UI must not only be visually appealing but also functionally intuitive.
“If all of that is accomplished, then the player is now comfortable while perusing the recipe book,” he wrote. “But I want more than just comfort. I want to delight the player.”
While Barone continues to refine Haunted Chocolatier, he hasn’t completely halted development on Stardew Valley. Earlier this year, just ahead of the farming sim’s 10th anniversary, he provided insights into the upcoming 1.7 update. Although this update, like Haunted Chocolatier, lacks a release date, it will introduce two new marriage candidates. Barone has also contemplated a “Stardew Classic” and a true sequel. For both Haunted Chocolatier and future Stardew Valley updates, it appears fans will need to be patient.
Barone concluded his latest blog post with gratitude, saying, “As always, I really appreciate your patience.”
Even if Haunted Chocolatier takes another decade to arrive, it promises to be worth the wait.
