Riot Games Unveils League of Legends Classic Following Leak Surge

Riot Games is diving back into nostalgia with the announcement of League of Legends Classic, a throwback to its iconic 16-year-old MOBA. This revelation follows a series of leaks where dataminers uncovered details about the Classic version and the champions that will be available.

The reveal video for League of Legends Classic doesn’t provide much concrete information about the game itself. Instead, it showcases Riot’s exploration of what a Classic version might entail. Will it capture a specific season, a particular build, or a selection of champions with their original abilities? Perhaps even a beta version? The live-action trailer, reminiscent of a classic Pepe Silvia bit from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, suggests that it could be a mix of all these elements.

According to Paul “Pabro” Bellezza, the executive producer for League of Legends, it seems Riot’s vision for the Classic experience may be quite flexible, allowing players to define what they consider “classic.”

This approach contrasts with companies like Blizzard Entertainment, which has rolled out World of Warcraft Classic and its expansions to let players relive the early days of the MMO. Blizzard has also introduced Classic modes in Overwatch, enabling players to experience the game in various states of balance with a limited roster of heroes.

Dataminers within the League of Legends community are actively investigating which specific era or eras Riot is aiming to recreate, digging up artwork and skins from the Public Beta Environment (PBE) for clues. So far, their findings have been inconclusive.

Riot has promised more information will be revealed in July. “Tune in to MSI Finals on July 11 at 11pm PDT for more,” states the YouTube description of the League of Legends Classic reveal video. The Mid-Season Invitational is taking place in Daejeon, South Korea, so stay tuned for additional updates.
