Big Tech Sounds Alarm on Rising Gaming Prices Ahead

Microsoft and Apple recently revealed that many of their products will see price increases, meaning gamers will soon be shelling out more for Xbox consoles, iPads, and Mac computers. Unfortunately, insights from major tech companies indicate that this trend is likely to worsen.

The first hint of this came from the statements made by both Xbox and Apple regarding their price hikes. Microsoft noted that “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027.” On the other hand, Apple highlighted the surge in demand for memory and storage driven by the rapid growth of AI data centers, stating, “We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly.”

In essence, there’s a significant spike in demand for the components that gaming consoles, tablets, and computers share with the data centers powering AI. As companies like Microsoft and Apple face higher production costs, these expenses are inevitably reflected in retail prices. Unfortunately, many industry leaders believe this isn’t just a temporary issue.

Reports indicate that Lenovo’s executive director, Martin Hiegl, expressed at a German ISC conference that prices will “never” return to the levels seen a year or two ago. Micron, a key player in the current memory crisis, voiced strong concerns about the situation, particularly regarding Apple. Micron’s CGO, Sumit Sadana, remarked, “We told a couple of the customers who were being very aggressive with pricing at that time that this is not constructive,” adding that many industry investments were halted in 2023 due to poor pricing and margins.

Micron has also committed to maintaining high memory prices for the next five years. With their firm stance on these elevated price points and their criticism of companies like Apple for contributing to the shortage, it seems even the giants of tech are resigned to the fact that prices won’t be dropping anytime soon.

For gamers, the prospect of worsening conditions is disheartening. The Steam Machine has already faced criticism for its steep price, and now Microsoft and possibly Sony are gearing up to launch next-gen consoles amid soaring component costs. Prepare to spend significantly more on new gaming hardware in the coming years, as the tech landscape is set to become even pricier.
