Batman Reunites with His Butler—But There’s a Surprising Twist!

When Alfred Pennyworth met his tragic end at the hands of Bane during the “City of Bane” storyline in 2019, many fans assumed it was just another temporary twist in the comic book world. Fast forward seven years, and Batman is still without his loyal butler, never quite able to fill the void left by his most trusted ally. However, that gap is about to be addressed in Batman #12 with the introduction of a new butler, who happens to be a Pennyworth.

DC has been hinting at the arrival of this new butler in Matt Fraction’s ongoing Batman series for some time. Speculation has run rampant about her identity. Could she be a reimagined version of Alicia Silverstone’s character from the 1997 film? Or perhaps a fresh take on Alfred’s niece, Daphne Pennyworth? Maybe she’s a completely original character? The mystery has been solved, as artist Jorge Jiménez has confirmed that the character is Verity Pennyworth in an Instagram post, which also showcased a “Verity Pennyworth Design Variant” cover for Batman #12 featuring the same artwork.

The official solicitation for the issue provides a bit more context about Verity’s role, though it leaves her connection to Alfred somewhat ambiguous. It reads:

SIX ASSASSINS. ONE CITY. COUNTLESS WAYS TO DIE! Six of the world’s deadliest killers have descended on Gotham City at once—but who hired them, and who’s the target? Surely, it can’t be the Batman… As the Caped Crusader races to uncover who set this deadly plan in motion, the late Alfred Pennyworth provides a gift from beyond the grave with the arrival of a brilliant new ally to the Bat-Family at a time when it needs one most.

For those who may have missed recent developments in Batman comics, or have been engrossed in the acclaimed Absolute Batman series, it might come as a shock to learn that Alfred is indeed dead. This pivotal moment occurred at the conclusion of Tom King’s three-year run on the main Batman title. King has mentioned that Alfred’s death was initially meant to be a ruse, but DC’s publisher decided to make it permanent after witnessing the strong reactions from fans.

Since 2025, Matt Fraction has been at the helm of the ongoing series, placing significant emphasis on Batman’s relationship with his deceased butler. In the series’ first issue, Batman is depicted conversing with an apparition of Alfred. There was some confusion about whether this was a hologram or an A.I. version of Alfred, but Fraction clarified during an AMA that the character serves more as a Jiminy Cricket figure, guiding Batman from the shadows.

With the introduction of a living Pennyworth, Batman may finally gain a new moral compass to help navigate his challenges.

Batman #12 is set to hit shelves on August 5.
